The Organic Farmer Protesting with his Pen - Wandering Words
Wu Sheng (吳晟) is considered one of the foremost representatives of local Taiwanese literature. Nearly everyone in Taiwan has read his poems and now readers around the world enjoy translations in English, French, and Japanese. He’s a strong proponent of organic farming who continues to teach in his hometown of Xizhou, Changhua. The author’s approach to environmental ethics is inspired by Aldo Leopold’s suggestion that the environment simply enlarges the boundaries of communities to include soils, waters, plants, and animals. The development of Taiwanese society may be entirely driven by the economy, but the value of our lives cannot be measured by economic figures alone. The spirit of environmental protection is important too.
