CK Yang, a Taiwanese athlete of Austronesian heritage, and Rafer Johnson, the first African American flag bearer at the Olympics, battled for the gold medal in decathlon. Despite the fierce competition on track, Yang and Johnson were lifelong friends off track, and were both under the instruction of Coach Ducky Drake at UCLA, where they epitomized sportsmanship and camaraderie by supporting each other in training.
