While China outclasses Taiwan in terms of military might, Taiwan has been able to protect itself from invasion with asymmetric warfare strategy, which is also known as the “porcupine strategy.” The core concept of such strategy is to create asymmetry of cost for aggressors, making Taiwan too expensive or too tough to invade. To achieve this goal, Taiwan has invested in cheap, portable and accurate weapons capable of destroying large targets, as well as in submarines that provide deterrence through stealth in the Taiwan Strait. In addition, Taiwan has been bolstering resiliency in case of urban warfare by improving civil defense and reserve system.
