Taiwan Pride celebrates the first country in Asia to legalize same-sex marriage. For Yoyo Chen, a young woman living in Taipei, the referendum presents an opportunity to marry her partner and realize their dream of having two kids through surrogacy. However, the announcement that she plans to marry a woman comes as a shock her parents. Some do not see same-sex marriage as a real family and so they worry that their children might be bullied because of it. Meanwhile, in Cairo, Esraa’s marriage has failed. The family believed such a union should last forever. But a wish and reality prove to be two very different things. In many parts of the world, parents often get involved in their adult children’s family planning. At times, this well-meaning support ends feeling more like a tense discussion between Us and Them.
