Train stations come in many shapes and sizes and have their own unique stories to tell. Join railroad fans from around the world in appreciating some of the most special train stations in Taiwan! Rail travel can take you from Taipei to Hsinchu and Kaohsiung in a single day. But have you ever noticed that each of these cities’ stations has its own unique history and charm? Taipei Main Station is a massive transfer point accommodating thousands of bus, train, high-speed rail (HSR), and mass rapid transit (MRT) passengers daily. Hsinchu Station is also one of the top 10 busiest train stations in Taiwan, but its historic Baroque and Gothic architecture stands in stark contrast to that of the towering metropolitan Taipei Main. Hsinchu’s transportation hub has been in operation for over 100 years and has long supported the thriving community and businesses that surround it. While the railroads carry nostalgic memories for the older generations who grew up during Taiwan’s railway boom, interest in train culture is also growing among members of the younger generation. Several universities now have student clubs for train enthusiasts, and many young rail fans enjoy learning about the history and operation of Taiwan’s railroads. Today, the beautiful vintage Zhuifen Station building still attracts many students who hope a visit to the historic station will bring them good luck on their exams. In southern Taiwan, a massive overhaul of Kaohsiung station has been underway for nearly 20 years. A new and improved, modern station design will soon grace the central transportation hub of Taiwan’s second-largest city. Despite its contemporary feel, the station maintains a reference to the city’s past by incorporating the original Kaohsiung Station building, opened in 1941, as one of the station’s new entrances. Come along as we appreciate the beauty and diversity of some of Taiwan’s most emblematic train stations.
