What Makes a Global Best-Selling Comic Book?-Taiwan Comic Universe Ep. 1
Comic books come in many shapes and sizes, with artists telling diverse stories from around the world. The U.S. has superhero comics, while Japan has manga — but in Taiwan, a different style of comic book art is taking root. Following successful comic book artists through their creative processes, “Taiwan Comic Universe” explores Taiwan’s domestic comic book market as these artists try to take their work global. The trail leads to one of the world’s biggest international comic festivals in Angoulême, France. This is a unique opportunity for Taiwanese comic artists to enter the European market. Beyond the exhibition, there are also three-month artist residencies, where we meet several Taiwanese artists creating comics for the festival. Angoulême offers a chance to showcase Taiwan’s comic book art to industry professionals in Europe and to cultivate a whole new fanbase. From what goes into making a successful comic to what makes a comic book distinctly Taiwanese, learn more about these artists’ journeys. Through interviews with comic artists, editors, industry professionals, and more, explore the expanding world of Taiwanese comics. “Taiwan Comic Universe” follows some of Taiwan’s bestselling comic book artists as they bring their unique artistic styles to a global audience. Take a journey through the development of Taiwan’s comic book market, what makes a bestselling comic, and how Taiwan’s artists are taking their work onto the world stage.
