Tsai Yi-ling is a vibrant theater actress, striving to push the boundaries of the performing arts. However, in Asia, where practicality often takes priority, she faces many who question how to make a career in the arts. Tsai's dedicated pursuit of the craft helped build her extensive technique now celebrated on stages in Taiwan and around the world. As early as 1995, she began learning butoh as part of ritualized performances with Chi-Body Theater Troupe. Artistic director, Wen-tsui, was a visionary who pioneered Taiwan’s “Little Theatre Movement,” emphasizing emotional actualization over materialistic needs. She ignited the artistic passion Tsai continues to cultivate; all while balancing multiple productions and the tight schedules that have become commonplace in the Taiwanese theatre scene. Recent credits like “Yerma” (2018) were presented at Taiwan’s National Theatre by Greek Director, Theodoros Terzopoulos, following a month-long artistic workshop in Greece. His method asks performers to cultivate a rich inner world beyond simply interpreting their lines. Focusing on the physical sensations of inhalation, exhalation, and movement expands their perceptions to convey a human experience that transcends language and cultural barriers. Looking back, Taiwan’s legendary performer says acting is an adventure and a journey of discovery. Are you ready? “Rebel Artist” is a documentary series highlighting rising stars in punk, hip hop, and street culture. These fixtures of the underground scene now drive emerging pop culture trends taking shape over the past decade. They speak to the unmistakable power of staying true to yourself when striving to reach new heights.
