Leo Chiang: The Oscar Winning Filmmaker on the Front Lines-Rebel Artist Ep. 4
Director Leo Chiang’s powerful documentaries use an observer's lens to expose and document America's social undercurrents. His latest work “Island In Between”, presented in partnership with the New York Times, received an Oscar nomination for Best Documentary Short Film. The short explores Kinmen’s role as a frontline outpost between Taiwan and China. He likens the small island to his experience of being a transnational person growing up in Taiwan and the United States. For him, the world of film is an opportunity to address social issues, speak up for the marginalized, and shift focus to those who aren’t always in the mainstream. HAAPIFEST (2024) presented a retrospective on Chiang’s career, including “A Village called Versailles” and “Mr. Gallegos in Washington”, two films about the Vietnamese-American community in New Orleans. These projects speak to embracing the spirit of community at the heart of his endeavors; and his belief that our stories can help bring people together. What’s your favorite Leo Chiang documentary?
