The documentary series, “Taiwan Undaunted: In Search of the Nation That Cannot Call Itself a Nation,” created by renowned journalist Neal E. Robbins, is set to premiere on TaiwanPlus on September 6. This four-part, 105-minute series explores the multifaceted aspects of Taiwanese identity and the nation's ongoing struggle for recognition from multiple perspectives.
Robbins, who brings over 50 years of experience with Taiwan, first learned Mandarin on the island in the 1970s and later taught journalism to Taiwanese students in the 1990s. In 2023 and 2024, he returned to Taiwan, spending six months traveling across the island, interviewing locals, and observing the daily lives of its residents.
The documentary series begins with an examination of Taiwanese national identity. By incorporating the perspectives of ordinary citizens—including educators, academics, creative professionals, and artists—the series provides a nuanced exploration of the historical factors that have contributed to societal divisions.
Through interviews with experts, entrepreneurs, leaders, and politicians, the film examines the forces shaping Taiwanese society, including the tension between economic interests and environmental concerns, indigenous rights, and the impact of China's influence on political polarization. The documentary also discusses the emergence of democracy in the 1990s and how it empowered Taiwan’s civil society to reform social relations.
“Taiwan Undaunted” concludes with the realization that while many believe Taiwan’s fate is tied to Beijing’s decisions and the US-China rivalry, the island is actively shaping its own future, preparing its citizens for conflict while striving for peace.
