TaiwanPlus is proud to present “The Bikeman in Taiwan,” a new Danish–Taiwanese co-production that takes viewers on an unforgettable 1,000-kilometer cycling journey across the island. Hosted by Danish cycling enthusiast Niels-Ole Rasmussen, the six-episode series follows his ride across Taiwan from north to south and east to west, revealing some of the island’s most beautiful, unusual, and inspiring destinations along the way.
Traveling along the renowned Cycle Route 1, the series highlights Taipei, Hualien, Kaohsiung, Tainan, Taichung and Sun Moon Lake. Experiencing these locations from the seat of a bicycle offers Rasmussen a unique perspective on Taiwan’s landscapes and communities. His slow-paced approach allows him to fully absorb the scenery, pause for local delicacies, and connect with the rhythm of each destination.
Beyond the scenery, it is the people who shape the journey. At each stop, Rasmussen meets local residents whose warmth and generosity leave a lasting impression. During his journey he visits a reptile café where he holds snakes, learns to cook shrimp with young Indigenous fishermen and speaks with a guide from Hualien’s Taroko Gorge National Park about the damage caused by the 2024 earthquake and ongoing efforts to restore the area. The series celebrates not only Taiwan’s natural beauty but also the creativity, openness and diversity found in everyday life across the island.
Producer MiaoAn Chang said the program was designed to capture Taiwan through a more personal lens. “Cycling allows you to experience Taiwan at a human pace,” Chang said. “Through Niels-Ole’s journey, viewers can see the island not only for its landscapes, but also for the kindness, stories and culture of the people who live here.”
TaiwanPlus Head of Programming Jessie Shih noted that Rasmussen’s curiosity brings a fresh perspective to the series. “Rasmussen brings genuine curiosity to every step of this adventure, drawing in viewers who are unfamiliar with Taiwan and giving a new perspective to those who live here,” Shih said. “We’re delighted to have co-produced this program and believe audiences in Denmark, Taiwan and beyond will enjoy the journey.”
More than a travel program, “The Bikeman in Taiwan” invites viewers to slow down and experience the island in a different way. As Rasmussen reflects in the series, “That’s why we go cycling — to have time to see it all, to sense it all, and to wonder about it all.”
“The Bikeman in Taiwan” is now streaming on the TaiwanPlus website and YouTube channel.
