U.S. President Donald Trump has declined to say whether he would defend Taiwan against an attack by China. His predecessor Joe Biden said several times that his administration would come to Taiwan's aid. Later comments by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio reaffirmed Washington's opposition to any change in the status quo in the Taiwan Strait through coercion.
