Analysis: National Security and the Limits of Free Speech in Taiwan

Taiwan's constitution has strong protections for free speech. But a recent case, in which a Chinese influencer accused of advocating for unification with China by force had her residency revoked, is revealing the limits of those protections. TaiwanPlus spoke to Jimmy Chia-Shin Hsu, research professor of law at Academia Sinica, to learn more about the boundaries of Taiwan's free speech laws and how Chinese citizens in particular are regulated. TaiwanPlus also spoke to Soochow University political science professor Chen Fang-yu. Chen explains why speech supporting Chinese military action against Taiwan is not protected, and why he's not worried about the slippery slope of censorship.
