Taiwan’s foreign ministry has responded to comments made by Chinese President Xi Jinping. Xi said that for the United States to help maintain peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait, Washington must recognize the "Taiwan independence nature" of President Lai Ching-te. The ministry rejected Xi's claims, pointing to Beijing's frequent military activity around Taiwan as the main threat to regional peace.
