Former Taiwan People’s Party Legislator Li Chen-hsiu has been barred from running for mayor of Zhubei in northern Hsinchu County ahead of Taiwan’s November local elections. Election authorities ruled that Li, who was born in China, failed to meet a legal requirement that Chinese-born candidates prove they gave up their household registration in China at least 10 years before seeking office. Li says she will challenge the decision and continue pursuing her candidacy. The case comes as a record 25 Chinese citizens who settled in Taiwan have registered to run in this election cycle.
