For generations, hunting was more than just a livelihood for Taiwan's Indigenous peoples. It was a practice guided by customary law and by the belief that ancestors are always watching. But as modern regulations, land disputes and wildlife conservation reshape tribal life, a new generation is trying to balance honoring its heritage without losing its place in today's society. Standing between the tribe and the city, director Su Hung-en, who has both Indigenous and ethnic Han heritage, began filming his own family as a school assignment. That project led him to documentaries and, in 2024, his first fiction feature, "Hunter Brothers." In this episode, we explore Gaya, the traditional law that shapes how a community lives and works, the tug of war between hunting rights and conservation and why seeing a conflict from a distance may reveal more than judging it up close.
