Taiwan’s President Lai Ching-te has given his first National Day speech – and surprised observers with his conciliatory tone toward China. That didn’t stop China responding with a show of military strength. In this episode of Correspondents, TaiwanPlus journalist Louise Watt sits down with Emily Feng, international correspondent for NPR, and David Shen, a reporter for CommonWealth Magazine, to talk about where Taiwan-China relations go from here. Also on the show: • How does China view the U.S. elections? Would Beijing prefer to see a President Harris or a President Trump? • Taiwan’s link to exploding pagers in Lebanon; • China’s grip on a critical mineral that could disrupt Washington’s attempts to kick it out of global supply chains; • And what’s on our Reporters’ Notebooks this week? Watch this episode of Correspondents, a show where we talk about the latest stories and what's going on behind the headlines with reporters in the Asia-Pacific region.
