Taiwan's official name is the Republic of China, but in casual settings most of its inhabitants refer to it simply as Taiwan. With a complicated history and an ongoing struggle for the very right to exist, Taiwan is figuring out what it means to be Taiwanese. We explore the dynamics of Taiwanese identity with the help of Christina Hu, a director at the Taiwanese American Citizens League, and Evan Dawley, a researcher of Taiwanese and East Asian history, identity formation and imperialism at Goucher College.
