Preserving the Good Old Days: Art Restoration in Taiwan - inVISIBLE TAIWAN Ep9
Restoration is the key to connecting the old and the new. Taiwanese art restorer Leo Tsai and his team are dedicated to preserving the gates of Taoist temples in Taiwan. These temple gates have exquisite murals of Taoist deities on them, yet the resplendence of such temple art is often dimmed by the passage of time or natural hazards. Leo reveals the details on the temple gates and preserves cultural heritage for future generations. The Chiayi City Art Museum is another case of restoration and repurposing in Taiwan. Transformed from former tobacco and liqueur warehouses, the museum is a hybrid architecture with giant glass curtains that highlight the original features of the buildings. By altering the layout of the museum, the architects created a friendly space that welcomes local community members.
