In an homage to the groundbreaking era of filmmaking that put Taiwan on the map of the international art scene, TaiwanPlus has released a free new film curation on Taiwan’s New Wave Cinema. The English-language streaming platform, in partnership with the Taiwan Film and Audiovisual Institute, has curated a collection that sheds light on lesser-known gems as well as revolutionary classics of the movement, including “The Sandwich Man,” “Dust in the Wind,” and “Straw Man.”
The Taiwan New Wave emerged in the mid-1980s, at a time when Taiwan's society was changing rapidly. Avant-garde directors used social realism to reflect on social phenomena, taboos, and other aspects of modern culture. The TaiwanPlus film curation, titled "Between the Tides: Taiwan New Wave Classics and Beyond," breaks down the complexity of the movement by organizing eight films into three phases, each offering a unique perspective on changes in social movements and art.
While this curation is the platform’s first to spotlight the Taiwan New Wave, “Between the Tides” joins a host of other film curations on TaiwanPlus, including a selection of Tsai Ming-liang films, classic Taiwanese romance films, and others. TaiwanPlus CEO Michael Yu says, "Celebrating the vibrant diversity of Taiwan's film heritage is a key part of TaiwanPlus’s mission to bring Taiwan to the world. We hope that this curation will give global audiences an opportunity to understand and appreciate Taiwan’s unique cinematic contributions during this era.”
"Between the Tides” will be available on TaiwanPlus from September 30, 2023 to March 2024. To see more TaiwanPlus curations and other cultural programming, visit the TaiwanPlus website.
