"Taiwan Talks," TaiwanPlus' political talking head program, took its first step outside the studio environment, filming two episodes at National Chengchi University (NCCU) in Taipei that are set to premiere on May 9th and 13th as the first installment of an interactive student audience series that will take them to campuses across Taiwan and beyond.

On May 3rd, both local and international students filled the lecture theater to take part in the shoot, which featured an expert panel of four NCCU professors, including Chair of the Department of Diplomacy, Professor Charles Wu, Professor Huang Kwei-bo and Professor Chen Ping-kuei, also from the Department of Diplomacy and Professor Lee Jia-Yi, the Director of the International Master’s Program in International Studies. The discussion was moderated by Taiwan Talks host Yin Khvat.

The episode that was filmed first will air on May 9th  and focussed on cross-strait relations in light of the 2024 Presidential inauguration of Lai Ching-Te and Hsiao Bi-Khim. Students fielded questions on what the impact of the inauguration may be on these relations going forward, and what kind of foreign policy Taiwan should pursue in order to expand its international space, while maintaining peace and stability.

The second episode, which will air on May 13th, focused on recent conflict in the South China Sea between the Philippines and China, how the U.S. may be drawn in if this was to escalate, and in such a case, what the impact on Taiwan’s security would be.

Both episodes featured a lively and informative discussion, with students paying close attention to the insights of the panel, contributing and learning, making the most of their role as an integral part of the program. Post-filming,  Khvat was upbeat, stating that "‘Taiwan Talks’ mission isn’t just to inform our audience, but to engage with them. Filming live at NCCU enabled us to weave in the opinions, ideas and questions of our audience, taking the program to the next level where viewers don’t just watch, they interact with the vitally important issues that we discuss!"

The two episodes will be broadcast on TaiwanPlus’ TV channel on May 9th and 13th respectively, while ‘Taiwan Talks’ will be heading to more Universities throughout 2024, both inside and outside of Taiwan.
