TaiwanPlus’ original series “Rebel Artist” has been awarded the People’s Voice Award in the Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging category at the 2026 Webby Awards.
The category recognizes media that addresses systemic issues and amplifies underrepresented communities. The award underscores TaiwanPlus’ commitment to producing thoughtful, authentic storytelling grounded in diverse lived experiences.
This year, the Webby Awards received more than 13,000 entries from over 70 countries, alongside more than 4.6 million votes cast by over 940,000 participants worldwide, highlighting the significance of this recognition.
As a People’s Voice winner, Rebel Artist stands as a benchmark for digital storytelling in 2026. The series profiles emerging voices across Taiwan’s punk, hip hop, and street culture scenes, exploring the complexities of identity, creativity, and self-expression.
One featured episode follows drag performer Yolanda Mesula, founder of the Haus of Mesula. The story traces how her artistic identity is shaped by a tribute to her mother, interwoven with reflections on 1980s karaoke culture and the role of community in shaping performance. Her interpretation of “Hometown at Dusk” becomes a personal and cultural expression of belonging.
Producer David Tang said, “This recognition reflects the importance of telling stories that are honest, inclusive, and rooted in real communities. We are proud to spotlight voices that are often unheard but deeply influential.”
