How Will Lai End the Use of Chinese Equipment on Taiwan’s Military Bases?
In the lead-up to the 1980s, Ronald Reagan became convinced of the growing threat of "mutual assured destruction" in the Cold War. As a result, as U.S. president he decided to take Soviet policy under his own control within the White House. Over his eight years in power, he succeeded in persuading the USSR to reduce its nuclear arsenal, to end the Cold War and ultimately allow the dismantling of the Soviet Union. Now, as present-day Taiwan faces an existential threat from an opponent more powerful than the former USSR, Taiwan’s new president is taking charge of three new committees, including one on "whole-of-society" civil defense. How is that committee connected to recent incidents of Chinese equipment found on Taiwan's military bases and also to a Chinese vessel manned by an ex-PLA Navy captain that found its way near to Port of Taipei? Our guests: Chen Fang-yu - Assistant professor in political science, Soochow University Guermantes Lailari - Retired U.S. Air Force foreign area officer specializing in counterterrorism, irregular warfare and missile defense
