Chinese Coast Guard’s Growing Role in Maritime Disputes
In early July, a Taiwanese fishing vessel was seized by Chinese coast guard vessels off the coast of Kinmen. It follows a clash between Chinese and Philippine vessels on June 17th, signaling growing aggression in China’s maritime strategy. How will China’s broadening maritime enforcement impact regional and cross-strait relations? In this episode of “Taiwan Talks,” we discuss China’s “Coast Guard Order #3,” the militarization of its coast guard, and legal bases for maritime jurisdiction. Furthermore, we examine how domestic pressures in Taiwan as well as changing U.S. stances can impact cross-strait relations. Our guests are: Miles Yu - Hudson Institute’s China Center Director Huang Kwei-bo - National Chengchi University Global and Regional Risk Assessment Center at College of International Affairs Professor and Director Vincent Chao - Taipei City Councilor (DPP)
