Taiwan’s foreign minister says China has built “enormous” military bases on three features closest to Taipei-controlled Itu Aba, a landmass in the contested South China Sea known locally as Taiping Island. Additionally, President Tsai Ing-wen has been asked to visit Taiping Island to reassert Taiwan’s sovereignty, something she has not done while president. But why does Taiwan control this largest of the Spratly Islands in the first place?
