A Chinese warship came within 137m of a U.S. destroyer in the Taiwan Strait last week, violating the rules of international waters, according to U.S. command. This occured just one day before China’s defense minister said in his first international speech that conflict with the U.S. would bring “unbearable disaster.” Yet, over the same weekend as the near miss in the Taiwan Strait, at Asia’s biggest security summit, China refused the U.S.’s offer to talk.
