China's Drills Near Taiwan, EU Leaders Urge China to Bring Peace to Ukraine
Two EU leaders urge China to bring peace to Ukraine, and Beijing conducts military drills following President Tsai Ing-wen’s meeting with Kevin McCarthy. We ask whether China has what it takes to be a global peacemaker. Chinese planes and ships still remain close to Taiwan though three days of military drills have ended. The Chinese military claims they were simulating attacks on or blockading Taiwan. The drills started hours after French President Emmanuel Macron left Beijing. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen had accompanied on the visit. Macron gave interviews to media saying the EU should distance itself from the U.S. and not be drawn into a conflict over Taiwan. He advocated being a ""third pole"", not following either the Americans or Chinese.
