Following reports of a meeting between Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen and U.S. Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy, senior China expert Bonnie Glaser, German Marshall Fund of the U.S. Asia Program Director, speaks to Taiwan Talks about the reasons why the venue appears to have shifted to California, instead of Taipei. She talks about what impact this could have on the 2024 presidential elections in Taiwan. Glaser also explains the significance Taiwan’s long practice of presidential transits to the U.S. to meet members of Congress and other officials. Glaser sees no signs of China relaxing its campaign to squeeze Taiwan’s international space and olive branches extended to Taiwan’s democratically elected government. She explains how “One-China” policies of most countries around the world are different from China’s “One-China” principle and do not recognize that Taiwan is a part of China.
