Growing U.S. Led Global Support and Taiwan Readiness
As U.S. President Joe Biden met in-person with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Bali for the first time since taking office, Taiwan was front and center of the three-hour conversation. Taiwan Talks spoke with Washington based China and Taiwan expert Bonnie Glaser, German Marshall Fund of the U.S. Asia Program Director, on what this means for Taiwan and how the country can best deter against a potential Chinese invasion. Glaser stressed that deterrence lies in bolstering U.S. military capabilities and strengthening U.S.-led alliances and coalitions in increasing the cost of Chinese military action. She also shared the increased prospects of an FTA between Taiwan and the U.S. and how Taiwan has recently garnered more support from the international community. Glaser also touched on what she believes could be the possible scenarios of a Chinese invasion, Xi’s potential timeline, and how Taiwan should prepare for a Cross-Strait contingency.
