Chinese President Xi Jinping is visiting North Korea for the first time in seven years, shortly after summits with US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin. The trip comes as North Korea accelerates its nuclear and missile programs, deepens military cooperation with Russia and increasingly asserts itself as an independent strategic actor rather than a junior partner to Beijing. At the same time, questions are growing over whether China still supports the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, or if it has quietly accepted North Korea as a permanent nuclear power. In this episode, we examine the significance of Xi’s visit, the evolving China-North Korea-Russia relationship and what it means for regional security, US foreign policy and the balance of power in Northeast Asia. *Recorded on June 22, 9 at 3:30pm Taiwan Standard Time Host: Ethan Liu Producer: Miguel Yang Our guests: Liou To-hai - National Chengchi University College of International Affairs Adjunct Distinguished Professor Yao-Yuan Yeh - University of St. Thomas, Houston, International Studies and Modern Languages Professor and Endowed Chair Go Myoung-Hyun - Institute for National Security Strategy Senior Research Fellow
