How Prepared is Europe for a New Russian Offensive?
Host: Betty Chen As Russia’s invasion of Ukraine drags into its third year, the EU finds itself increasingly isolated on the world stage. Under President Donald Trump, the United States has withdrawn much of its military support for a democratic Ukraine and has flirted with abandoning the 76-year-old North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). Faced with this colder geopolitical reality, Europeans are discussing how they would defend themselves if Russian President Vladimir Putin attempts to seize territory from one of the EU’s eastern members, such as Lithuania, Estonia or Latvia. Could Moscow invade as soon as 2027, as some think tanks suggest? Or could German troops and the growing combined strength of the Nordic countries be enough to deter Putin? In this episode, we discuss the Russia-Ukraine war, European security, and what it might mean for China and Taiwan.
