As of recording time, a Filipino civilian convoy ship is en route to Sandy Cay, within Manila’s exclusive economic zone in the Spratly Islands. Sandy Cay is finding itself at the center of a new danger zone, following a ramming and water-cannoning incident by a Chinese Coast Guard ship against a Philippine research vessel. The incident was widely condemned by governments around the world for its reckless endangering of lives and threatening regional stability. It also marks the first time that China has used violence at Sandy Cay.
