Can Taiwan become the Asian king of combat drones? As Chinese military pressure builds, the United States and Taiwan say they are preparing a “hellscape” across the Taiwan Strait to rain hell down on any Chinese invasion of Taiwan. The term was first coined by U.S. Admiral John Aquilino in 2023 and has since been adopted by Admiral Samuel Paparo, current commander of the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command. The strategy calls for thousands of airborne and underwater drones as well as loitering munitions to disrupt and disable a potential Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) invasion.
