Why Australia Wants Darwin Port Back from China Firm as Election Looms
Ten years ago, a state government in Australia leased Darwin Port to Landbridge, one of China’s biggest port and logistics conglomerates. The 99-year lease grants 100% operations and 80% ownership to the Chinese firm. The company's chairman and founder Ye Cheng was a member of China’s 12th National Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) Committee, China's top political advisory body, from 2013 to 2018. Ye also represents the All China Federation of Taiwan Compatriots, whose goal is unification by influencing public opinion in Taiwan. Now with an election looming in Australia, local politicians say they intend to retake the port in the interest of national security.
