The Philippines and Japan are further deepening defense ties in the face of a "increasingly severe" security environment. Defense ministers of both countries, which face China's assertiveness in the region, met in the Philippines. Philippine defense secretary Gilberto Teodoro said, "We share also the common cause of resisting any unilateral attempt to reshape the global order without the consent of the participants of this global order and the attempt to reshape international law by force."
