Miao Hua, director of the Political Work Department of China’s Central Military Commission, has become the seventh member of the organization to be purged from their position since Chinese President Xi Jinping took power in 2012. He was removed on the grounds of serious violation of discipline. What does this indicate about Xi’s rule, and what effects will these purges have on the region at large? In this episode of “Taiwan Talks,” we examine possible motives behind investigations into Miao, what these purges may mean for Xi’s power in the CCP, and potential effects of a power struggle within the Chinese government. Furthermore, we examine how Trump may be approaching the Taiwan issue and negotiations with Xi Jinping, as well as whether he would maintain arms sales to Taiwan amid pressures from China.
