The UN General Assembly recently held its annual General Debate, during which Taiwan’s allies voiced support for Taiwan regarding UN Resolution 2758. However, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi claimed that Resolution 2758 has already resolved the issue of representation for all of China, including Taiwan. Additionally, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken met with Wang Yi in preparation for the upcoming Biden-Xi phone call. In this episode of “Taiwan Talks,” we examine the perspectives around UN Resolution 2758 at the UN General Debate, how Taiwan should approach issues such as de jure independence, and whether Taiwan can obtain a ticket to participation on the international stage. Furthermore, we discuss developments in U.S.-China relations, the Biden administration’s announcement of an aid package for Taiwan, and how developing stances on Taiwan and China may affect the coming U.S. elections.
