China has linked UN Resolution 2758 with its “One China” principle and used it to legitimize its claims over Taiwan. This has consequently restricted Taiwan’s participation in the international community. In September, Australia and the Netherlands passed pro-Taiwan motions that reject Beijing’s interpretation of Resolution 2758. As stances on this historic resolution begin to shift, can Taiwan take the opportunity to emerge on the international stage? In this episode of “Taiwan Talks,” we examine the debate around UN Resolution 2758, how China’s interpretation of the resolution has barred Taiwan from organizations such as the UN, and how international “One China” policies are developing. Furthermore, we discuss Taiwan’s opportunities for global participation, how U.S. elections may affect support for Taiwan, and whether multilateral or unilateral approaches would be best for Taiwan’s security.
