In July, Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. announced that all Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators (POGOs) will be banned by year’s end. POGOs proliferated under Marcos Jr.’s predecessor and over the past eight years have become hubs for Chinese criminal syndicates involved in money laundering, human trafficking, prostitution and financial scams. But how are POGOs linked to the disappearance of a small-town Philippine mayor, and possibly to Chinese influence operations?
