Following Hungary taking on the EU’s rotating presidency, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán made unexpected visits to Russia and China. Hungary’s unilateral actions have been condemned by all EU members except for Slovakia, and the EU Commision has chosen not to hold two important EU meetings in the country. Why did Orbán choose to act contrary to EU stances in his so-called “peace mission”? In this episode of “Taiwan Talks,” we discuss Hungary's growing ties with Russia and China, the EU’s increasing skepticism toward China, and the impact of the coming U.S. presidential elections on U.S.-EU relations. Furthermore, we examine the EU’s stance on Taiwan, and whether the bloc could effectively deter Chinese aggression.
