On July 3rd and 4th, Chinese President Xi Jinping, Russian President Vladimir Putin, and other leaders of Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) member states held a summit in Kazakhstan. The summit focused on trade and security, and introduced the group’s first fully European member, Belarus. Indian Prime Minister Modi was notably absent from the meeting. In this episode of “Taiwan Talks,” we discuss the purpose of the SCO, the reasons for its expansion, and the importance of Central Asia to Russia and China. Furthermore, we examine how Xi and Putin’s bilateral meeting and the coming U.S. elections will affect the global power balance.
