While China is militarizing rapidly and expanding operations in the South China Sea, the number of U.S. military bases and personnel in South Korea and Japan has steeply decreased. By closing its major bases in favor of access agreements, however, the U.S.’ ability to mobilize around both countries has increased. In this episode of "Taiwan Talks" we explore the history of U.S. bases in Asia and how changes in its strategy are affecting defense for South Korea, Japan, and the Philippines. Furthermore, we discuss the U.S.-Taiwan military alliance prior to 1979 and new plans to increase U.S. troops in Taiwan.
