Drones have been used for more than two decades in wars from Afghanistan and Iraq to Syria. But in Russia's war in Ukraine, they’re emerging as strategic assets in what has become a “war of drones.” Used in the tens of thousands every month by both sides, they’re helping level the playing field for Kyiv’s smaller, less-resourced military. Over in Asia, Taiwan has been watching closely and is developing its own drone warfare capabilities. The American MQ-9B SkyGuardian drone, a variant of the MQ-9 Predator B, is on order with the first two scheduled for delivery in 2026 and another two in 2027. Meanwhile, Chinese drone makers hold the largest share of the commercial drone market and export combat drones to the largest range of countries across the world.
