As Taiwan relaxed its nationality law in 2016 to allow highly skilled professionals to become Taiwanese citizens without having to renounce their original nationality, many foreign residents have since made Taiwan their permanent home. Oregon-native Mary Goodwin, Professor at the Department of English at National Taiwan Normal University Professor shares with Taiwan Talks the process she went through to become legally Taiwanese and how she has found new meaning in gaining the right to vote. She also compares Taiwan to the U.S., her country of birth, and how the island nation’s dynamic energy and respect for basic human needs has kept her here for so long.
