Taiwan Talks sat down with Iida Masafumi, director of the Japan security studies department at Japan's National Defense Research Institute. He was also one of the contributors to Japan's defense white paper, which stated: "The international community has entered a new era of crisis. It's now facing its greatest trial since the end of World War II. The existing order is being seriously challenged, and Japan finds itself in the most severe and complex security environment of that postwar era." When asked about China's recent explanation for its August 26 incursion into the Japanese airspace, Iida said he did not believe Beijing's explanation. He also said that any "softer" approach by China would not last into next year, which marks the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II. The team also sat down for a discussion with Filipino expert Jeffrey Ordaniel, the Pacific Forum's director for maritime security, who is based in Tokyo.
