What's Happening on Mavulis 'Spearhead of Philippines' Closest Island to Taiwan?

Around 140 kilometers south of Taiwan’s southernmost point is the Philippine island of Mavulis. Described by Philippine Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro as the “spearhead of the Philippines,” Mavulis is the site of a Filipino naval base and the recent focus of exercises by U.S. marines during the Manila-hosted Balikatan military drills.
