Around 140 kilometers south of Taiwan’s southernmost point is the Philippine island of Mavulis. Described by Philippine Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro as the “spearhead of the Philippines,” Mavulis is the site of a Filipino naval base and the recent focus of exercises by U.S. marines during the Manila-hosted Balikatan military drills. We ask what the activity means for Taiwan and to what extent the Philippines would get involved in any Taiwan contingency.
