US authorities have arrested a Chinese woman on spying charges, saying she gathered information on the son of Taiwan's President Lai Ching-te. According to the FBI, California-based realtor Heather Zhang and an accomplice filmed Lai Ting-yu and his wife and child near their home in Seattle in 2025 and passed the information to a Chinese government official. Investigators alleged their goal was to obtain potential leverage over Taiwan’s president. Zhang was arrested in Los Angeles on Sunday while attempting to board a flight to Shanghai. Taiwan’s Presidential Office has condemned China’s actions.
