The US’s trade deficit with Taiwan may reach over 200 billion US dollars in 2026. The estimate comes off new numbers published by the US government. In July alone, Washington added a record 20.7 billion US dollars to its deficit with Taipei. Analysts say the Trump administration could take action to address the discrepancy, but they point out that the US relies heavily on Taiwan for in-demand semiconductors.

Since the US began implementing reciprocal tariffs last year, trade imbalances have been a very important benchmark. If Trump thinks trade imbalances are too much, he might seek more investment or guarantees from trade partners.

On Wednesday US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said the US was preparing a new round of semiconductor tariffs while aiming to boost US chip production.
