Taiwanese citizens applying for national qualification certificates in Japan will now be able to state “Taiwan” as their country of origin. Taiwan’s representative to Japan, Lee Yi-yang, says that until now, people from Taiwan had to say they are from China when applying for one of Japan’s 322 national certificates. The change was supported by Japan’s Taiwan friendship parliamentary group. They say the move may benefit around 70,000 Taiwanese nationals living in Japan.
