REPORTER:
President Lai Ching-te is pushing US memory chipmaker Micron and its Taiwanese workers to negotiate ahead of a potential strike that could disrupt the global chip supply chain.
Lai Ching-te (TAIWAN PRESIDENT):
We also hope both workers and management will uphold the spirit [of mutual assistance] continue to negotiate sincerely and in good faith to build the broadest possible consensus. Only by creating harmonious labor relations can both sides win.
President Lai made the remarks at the opening of Micron’s second advanced assembly and testing plant in Taichung. It marks the company’s latest expansion in Taiwan, its largest overseas base with around 15,000 employees. Union workers in northern Taiwan are threatening to strike over profit-sharing disputes. A major strike could affect chip supply for AI servers.
