Language in the Legislature
For the first time, Taiwan’s parliament has used a simultaneous interpretation system to translate indigenous languages. The minister responsible for Taiwan’s indigenous peoples Icyang Parod began the session last week using the Amis language, and two politicians also asked questions in indigenous languages. Rik Glauert spoke to Sifo Lakaw of the Association of Pangcah Language Revitalization in Taiwan. He began by asking how he felt hearing his native language in the parliament.
